eHealth Topic of the Month - The World of Health IT 2007

ICT for HealthThe European Commission, together with seven European organisations: EUROREC, COCIR, EHTEL, HINE, CPME, EHMA and HOPE and 2 international organisations WHO and HIMSS are co-organising the second World of Health IT conference in Vienna 22-25 October, 2007. The first edition took place in Geneva in 2006 and demonstrated the great interest and need for such a market place where all the professionals in the domain can meet to learn from each other and find the most appropriate solutions at the largest exhibition dedicated to eHealth in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Last year's success indicates the potential for this conference to provide great forum for education, best practices in eHealth deployment, latest eHealth products and services at one of the largest eHealth exhibition shows in EU, and of course business. The European Commission, together with 7 organisations in EU, WHO and HIMSS are once more putting this event together for accelerating the deployment of eHealth solutions, creating conditions for innovation, friendly and sustainable eHealth market.

The European Commission is directly or indirectly involved in the preconference workshops, sessions on Patient safety (e.g. ES31, ES36, ES42), sessions on best practices and EHR (ES25, ES51), thought leader session on certification of (TL7) and many other parallel events.

Join the WHIT 2007 to learn more about EC eHealth funded projects and studies dealing with the implementation of good practice in European Hospitals, patient safety, personal health records and electronic health records, eHealth roadmaps, eHealth standards, patients/citizens mobility or predictive medicine.

Pre and post-conference
EuroRec organises a Pre-Conference Workshop on High Quality EHRs: A Challenge for Cooperation in Health, based on results of the EC-supported Q-REC project.

COCIR Pre-Conference: European Projects to Boost National IT Initiatives. This meeting is strongly supported by EC-funded projects concerned with Member State cooperation and the socioeconomic impact of eHealth.

HINE and the EC-funded Good eHealth study organise a workshop on European Good Practice in eHealth – Systems and Applications for Hospitals. Concrete examples will be presented by the case owners and will be complemented by market review results.

Innovative approaches to financing eHealth solutions (on invitation only) A special post-conference meeting is organised by the European Commission. It will cover financing opportunities to boost investment in eHealth, concrete experiences, challenges and innovative schemes presented by different stakeholders from national and regional organisations, international financial institutions, healthcare providers and industry initiatives. The role and good practices of Private Public Partnerships and procurement will be highlighted.

Sessions
EU eHealth agenda and activities on Patient Safety
The session will present the latest strategy and activities of the European Commission in eHealth. New initiatives in the areas of patient safety, personal health records and electronic health records will be announced. Planned research and support to deployment activities will be briefly presented. Special focus will be given to activities relating to patient safety.

Good eHealth: Implementing good practice in Europe's hospitals
Integrated Care: The presentation gives an overview of the experience gained in the implementation of eHealth systems and applications across Europe's hospitals. It provides examples of effective hospital applications, positively evaluated in term of quality, access and productivity.

Certification of EHRs: Criteria, Procedures and Tools
Integrating IT Leadership to improve Healthcare delivery and performance. EuroRec will present an update on the development of its certification criteria repository, as well as on its recommended procedures, including the use of its EHR profiling tool as developed by the EC-funded Q-REC project.

The Role of ICT in Patient Safety: Health Professionals' View
As a complement to the traditional health professionals' practice, ICT tools can prove a very useful means to improve patient safety. However, for ICT to be helpful, a collaborative effort between all stakeholders (health professionals, institutions, industry, patients) is essential. Specific examples of how this collaborative work can deliver improvements in the provision of and access to high quality and safe healthcare will be presented.
ES 36 – 24th October – 11:30-12:30

eHealth Standards: A crucial element for effective healthcare IT
DG Enterprise will present a session on Patient Safety that will provide information on new and proposed eHealth-related standardisation initiatives. With audience participation, discussion will include the importance of standards and ways to improve global adherence to ensure that all stakeholder needs are addressed in a harmonised way.

Supporting Mobile Citizens: Integrating Healthcare across Europe
Obtaining healthcare outside their residence country is still problematic for many Europeans. The TEN4Health service package is presented, which contributes towards improved healthcare provision for mobile European Union citizens - supported by the former eTEN Programme.
