Growing Diagnostic Testing Demands

Siemens HealthcareThe Germano de Sousa Group in Portugal has recently equipped its laboratories with more than 30 Siemens core laboratory instruments to address managing the sheer volume of patients in the areas of chemistry, immunoassay, coagulation, microbiology, molecular, and blood gas testing. The instruments have been disbursed across 12 laboratories in Portugal.

Hitting the ground running
Among many other products, the highlight for Germano de Sousa, PhD and president of the Clinical Pathology Group, is Siemens' Dimension Vista® 1500 Intelligent Lab System, which provides high quality results and effectively helps de Sousa manage its increasing number of test volumes. Two such systems were added to the repertoire at the main lab, Labdiagnóstica, in Lisbon, Portugal and this new class of analyzer has helped the laboratories increase their productivity. The intelligent system also comes equipped with LOCI® advanced chemiluminescence. "We grew and our previous devices did not have the capacity to cope with the enormous volume of the 3,500 to 4,000 patients we serve on a daily basis," explains de Sousa. "Whenever I choose, I consider the best quality possible, in order to provide the best healthcare for the patient."

Looking at the future optimistically
The main lab in Lisbon also installed two ADVIA Centaur® XP Immunoassay Systems to complement the high throughput that the Dimension Vista 1500 system can't handle. With the ADVIA Centaur XP system, de Sousa can process up to 240 tests hourly while reducing administrative tasks with its integrated data archive. This saves the lab precious time needed to manage the growing number of patients. When asked about the future with Siemens, de Sousa explains that the laboratory group is still in the process of expanding: "The laboratory in Oporto is growing and we predict that we will manage clinical pathology in two additional hospitals."
