European Commission published the results of the Qualitative Eurobarometer on patient involvement in healthcare. The aim of this research was to explore views on patient involvement in healthcare across fifteen European Member States. In-depth interviews were carried out with five healthcare practitioners and ten patients, in each country. This research was qualitative in nature and is therefore not intended to be representative of the views of either practitioners or patients in the participating countries. Conclusions reflect the experience and views of those who took part in the study.

Executive Summary
According to the OECD, evidence is growing that, if left unchanged, Europe's current healthcare systems will become unsustainable within the next 15 years. As budgetary pressures take hold, finding efficiencies has become central to the preservation of high quality care. This combined with ageing populations suffering from chronic conditions, and lower proportions of individuals providing the tax revenue on which healthcare funding depends, is creating the perfect storm.

This research is based on in-depth interviews and discussions with 39 health leaders from across 15 countries and three different regions - Europe, ASPAC and the Americas. The individuals interviewed for this report are those with national and international reputations in the field of health management, health policy and eHealth across the world. Insights from these interviews were augmented with existing published literature from leading academics and practical examples of eHealth around the world.
