Interoperable eHealth is Worth it - Securing Benefits from Electronic Health Records and ePrescribing

The EHR IMPACT study was commissioned by the European Commission, Directorate General Information Society and Media,Unit ICT for Health,and comprises of nine quantitative and two qualitative independent evaluations of good practice cases of interoperable electronic health record (EHR) and ePrescribing systems in Europe and beyond. The goal of the study is to inform and support ongoing initiatives and implementation work by the European Commission,Member State governments, private investors, and other actors.

Business Models for eHealth - Final Report

This report presents the analysis of a study funded by the ICT for Health Unit to explore business models for the implementation of value-creating and sustainable eHealth systems in Europe. It also introduces a set of policy recommendations for the European Commission and other stakeholders, with the ultimate objectives being: a) the improvement of the overall quality and efficiency of provision of health services in general via eHealth services, taking into consideration the present and future socio-economic and financial challenges faced by national healthcare authorities in Europe;

The research and analysis was carried out by the Information Society Unit at JRC-IPTS in the context of PREDICT, a research project co-financed by JRC-IPTS and the Information Society & Media Directorate General of the European Commission.

ICT Enabled Independent Living for Elderly

We are living in the midst of an unprecedented transition: the rapid ageing of the inhabitants of the industrialised world, accompanied by a diminishing number of young people. Figures in the Green Paper on Demographic Change launched by the Commission show that by 2030 there will be a shortage of about 20.8 million people of working age in the EU. In 2030 roughly two active people (15-65) will have to take care of one inactive person (65+). And Europe will have 18 million children and young people less than today.

Regulatory Framework for Electronic Communications in the European Union

The adoption of the EU electronic communications reform package in November 2009 paved the way towards strengthening the European electronic communications market by revising rules to ensure more effective competition and better rights for consumers. Much has been accomplished already: the market has become more competitive, generating investment, innovation and growth in all 27 EU Member States.
