DMF Systems Deliver eDischarge on iPad and Tablet PCs

DMF SystemsDMF Systems launch their eDischarge solution on iPad and tablet PCs. DMF Systems have maintained all of the core functionality of eDischarge on the iPad whilst enabling greater efficiency for clinicians.

There is no doubting the importance of delivering prompt, legible and accurate discharge summaries to GPs. They benefit the patient through defining continuity of care and protect them against instances of medication errors or unnecessary delays in delivery of the Summary Care Record to the GP. The benefits to the hospital are also significant; eDischarge has been shown to reduce readmission rates as well as medication errors. The cost benefit analysis of eDischarge summaries is positive and well documented; the solution pays for itself in a very short period of time and continues to do so.

So why are they not being used more widely in hospitals today?
Well, lack of resources to fund ICT development is a considerable barrier, but when you look at the cost benefits then this argument really does not stack up. Clinician buy-in and usage as well as the availability or unavailability of workstations are other barriers to adoption.

By delivering applications such as eDischarge on iPad or tablet PC the opportunity for non-interrupted and continuous treatment is provided. The clinician can treat the patient at the bedside, consult and demonstrate care and diagnostic information and record notes or summary information immediately. Clinical summaries on iPad will lead to better management of patients as they cross boundaries of care.

The DMF Systems solution still retains all of the features to assist the clinician complete a summary in as short a time as possible. Hot list selection of diagnosis and procedure ICD 10 coding. Access to patient, ward and specialty lists. Medication management and Electronic Prescribing (ePrescribing) functionality. We have also introduced additional Clinical Decision Support tools for clinicians, such as drug-to-drug and drug-to-allergy interaction functionality.

Discharge summaries provide one of the primary communication layers between primary and secondary care. eDischarge Summaries ensure timely delivery and are a fundamental development in Health Information Technology. Properly developed, Electronic Discharge Summaries will lead to better patient outcomes through more effective discharge planning and controlled continuity of care.

A recent study from Manhattan Research found that 71% of physicians believe a smart phone is essential to their practice. If the smart phone is essential then how essential will the tablet become?
