Eucomed, the European medical technology industry association, expresses disappointment and strong concern at the outcome of a vote in the European Parliament’s Committee for Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI). The Committee has voted in favour of an extreme heavy bureaucratic procedure which combines a complex, unpredictable scrutiny process with a de facto case-by-case centralised pre-marketing authorization system.

Patients at NHS Lothian will soon be able to access up-to-date information about their health and care online through a new patient portal. Over the past month a small group of patients have begun securely accessing their patient information including test results, allergies, clinical documents and information about past and future appointments electronically.

Denmark's New Continua-Compliant National Health IT Reference Architecture Available in English
Denmark has issued an English-language translation of its national health IT reference architecture, which mandates compliance with Continua's Design Guidelines for interoperability of devices, systems and services in personal connected health. Denmark became the first nation ever to formally adopt Continua's Design Guidelines as part of a national healthcare system when it published its National Action Plan for Telemedicine last year.

Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals Improves Patient Care Visibility with Stone Group
Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust (BSUH) in partnership with Stone Group, has completed the installation of a new electronic bed management system as part of improvements to ward efficiency and patient care throughout its six hospitals. The project involved the installation of around 70 Samsung Large Format Display (LFD) monitors with touch screen capability across all inpatient wards through the Trust's two sites in Brighton and Haywards Heath.

Royal Society of Medicine Goes Electronic with ClinicalKey
The Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) will provide its 21,000 members with electronic access to thousands of peer-reviewed medical and surgical journals and reference books. The RSM will be able to offer its members access to more than 540 journals, including The Lancet, and 1,060 books, including titles such as Gray's Anatomy and Netter's Anatomy, through Elsevier's ClinicalKey or via the RSM's online library catalogue.

While the Francis Report was voluminous and in parts failed to give clear direction on next steps, the most recent Berwick Report was criticised for being 'soft' and 'over simplistic' but in its digestible 46 pages, it distilled the key issues that the NHS continues to face in putting patient safety first. At its most basic, it said learning and leadership must be wholeheartedly addressed.
