Leeds Teaching Hospital Modernises its IT Integration Using InterSystems Ensemble

InterSystemsInterSystems announced that Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust have implemented InterSystems Ensemble® as the foundation of a service-oriented architecture (SOA). The Trust selected InterSystems Ensemble as its seamless platform for integration and the development of connectable applications to modernise its integration capability. This will help future-proof enhancements and extensions to its IT applications and services, and make it easier to innovate and create new IT services.

Leeds Teaching Hospital is one of the largest and busiest NHS Trusts in the country, treating over a million patients a year. Previously, for each new IT interface the Trust had to manually re-configure numerous diverse software interfaces across the entire hospital. This was costly and time-consuming, as well as potentially operationally disruptive.

The ability to "plug-and-play" interfaces using Ensemble's interface mapping facility provides the Trust with a standardised process that could reduce the time and costs for bringing interfaces online by up to 80%. The Trust will also make use of Ensemble's compliance with the government's Interoperability ToolKit (ITK) standards that will significantly lower the barriers for the introduction of new, innovative applications and devices for connected care.

Senior Application Developer at the Trust, Jason Melton, said "Ensemble provides our IT framework with a reliable and efficient capability to integrate various existing systems that are currently operating in separated silos. It also helps us accommodate future technology innovations using the ITK standards, which is vital as we move towards a common system where different Trusts can share resources and activities."

The initial phase used Ensemble to integrate into the Trust's IT infrastructure a new e-prescribing solution that enables doctors to directly request prescriptions from the hospital's pharmacy and at the same time update the patient electronic health records. Plans include the integration of a new digital dictation service and patient self-service kiosk touchscreens in the outpatient clinics.

Jonathan Selby, InterSystems UK & Ireland Country Manager, said "Ensemble provides the Leeds Teaching Hospital with greater IT flexibility and functionality that enables them to modernise their IT systems in a cost-effective way, now and in the future. We are delighted that the Trust is using our advanced technologies to deliver breakthrough healthcare solutions with interoperability to significantly improve working methods and patient care."
