Dr Mike Cheshire, RCP Clinical Vice President, said: "The pathways are particularly useful for doctors treating patients outside their main specialty and for junior doctors who are still learning how to manage a wide range of medical conditions. They are particularly useful at the interface between specialist and generalist and can be an excellent framework for service redesign."
Map of Medicine is a visual representation of evidence-based, practice informed pathways and a key tool for clinician-led service improvement programmes. By working alongside those with front-line clinical experience, the Map creates pathways that are continuously updated, clinically relevant and evidence-based.
Pritpal S Tamber, Publishing Director, Map of Medicine, said: "Healthcare pathways cannot be solely derived from published information; they must be informed by those with practice-based knowledge. By working directly with the clinical stakeholder community, we are giving local clinical champions the confidence to use the Map to facilitate changes in local healthcare delivery to safely increase quality and productivity."
More than 50 local communities in England and Wales are already reaping the rewards of using the Map to safely deliver lower healthcare delivery costs and improved patient outcomes, such as reduced hospital admissions and lowered waiting times.
