UK Leads European Research Programme with £10M Investment
The UK has made its first substantial commitment to a major emerging pan-European science project with a £10M investment by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). BBSRC has awarded funding to the European Molecular Biology Laboratory's European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), based at Hinxton near Cambridge, to permit a dramatic increase in the institute's data storage and handling capacity.

Last Call to Implement Car Safety System Voluntarily
The European Commission has made a last call to all EU countries to speed up voluntary implementation of the new in-car communication technology 'eCall' that could save 2 500 lives a year. The eCall system automatically dials 112, Europe's single emergency number when a car has a serious accident and sends its location to the nearest emergency service.

The European Commission's Digital Competitiveness report shows that Europe's digital sector has made strong progress since 2005: 56% of Europeans now regularly use the internet, 80% of them via a high-speed connection (compared to only one third in 2004), making Europe the world leader in broadband internet. Artificial Nerve Cells Show Promise
Researchers in Sweden are breaking boundaries in the field of nerve cell communication by creating the first artificial nerve cell capable of communicating with human nerve cells. The research will fuel understanding in the pathophysiology, molecular targets and therapies for the treatment of various nervous system disorders such as Parkinson's disease. The findings have been published in the journal Nature Materials.
