Call for Papers: Personal Health - Intelligent Solutions to Serve Empowered Patients

ICMCC8-11 June 2010, University of Westminster, London, UK.
Dealing with medical and care compunetics, the field of social, societal and ethical implications of computing and networking, ICMCC decided to focus the 2010 Event on Electronic Health Records (EHR) and secondarily, the connection between EHR and Digital Homecare.

ICMCC intents to combine in this event ontology-driven health information system design for advanced interoperability with the paradigm change towards pervasive person-centric care including prevention, home care and wellness, together forming adaptive distributed health information systems solutions. Important issues to be considered are virtual Electronic Health Records and Personal Health Records acting as semantically interoperable communication and cooperation platform for personalized ubiquitous health services in a trustworthy environment.

Following is a a non-restrictive list of subjects for this call for papers.

EHR and Knowledge Mangement

  • Evidence Based Practice and EHR
  • Nursing, KM and EHRs
  • EHR as a vehicle for successful Knowledge Management
  • Making KM work
  • Emergency Care, EHRs and the role of KM
  • Concept representation in EHRs
  • EHR data quality criteria, quality evaluation schemes and consequences of an insufficient data (and information) quality management
  • Storage and storage system access (central, de-central, local, distributed, private)
  • Terminology and ontology challenges
  • The role of standardized ontologies, terminologies and classification systems for knowledge management, representation and interoperability

Social aspects of EHR

  • How do we inform patients about functions and goals of EHRs
  • Training / further education and eLearning aspects for useful and usable record access (health professionals, patients, relatives)
  • Do we have data to substantiate the importance of the impact of EHR on users
  • Will an integrated EHR, as opposed to an EHR and a separate PHR, stimulate people more to get actively involved in using the EHR
  • Communication between caregivers
  • Communication between caregivers and patients
  • Family history creation
  • Linking to additional (health-related) information (lifestyle, wellness; linkage tokens and mechanisms
  • Aspects of ownership of EHRs and EHR systems
  • Aspects of mental health; e.g. integration in EHRs, privacy issues

Ethical aspects of EHR

  • Ethical Code and Fair Information Principles in health
  • Privilege management and access control including aspects like regulations, rules, access monitoring, consent and consent management, corrections by patients, access by 3rd party (relatives, friends)
  • Benefits of permanent record access (for patients and clinicians, economic aspects, cost-benefit-relationship, impact on health, impact on treatment, impact on recovery, health outcome)
  • Sealed envelope
  • Secondary use of data
  • Audit trails
  • Long term archiving
  • Critical issues and issue resolution
    • Errors and error handling (e.g. patient and clinician agree the data is wrong)
    • Conflicts and conflict resolution
    • Disclosure rules and agreements

EHR and digital homecare

  • Data storage
  • Including monitoring data in EHRs
  • Input by nurses, relatives, physiotherapists etc. related to DH processes
  • Specific areas like diabetes, thrombosis/coagulation

Future of EHR (visionary)

  • Contributions on future developments in the implementation, adoption and use of intelligent EHRs and the implications thereof, seen in the light of patient empowerment.
