Satellite Symposium - Assessing Fracture Risk: the Future for Designing New Therapies

The Osteoporotic Virtual Physiological Human (VPHOP) Consortium organizes a symposium entitled "Assessing fracture risk: the future for designing new therapies" which will be held during the IOF WCO-ECCEO10 Congress in Florence, Italy. The symposium will take place in Hall B, Spadolini Pavillion - Fortezza da Basso, Viale Filippo Strozzi 1. The event will provide an opportunity to present the clinical community the early results of the VPHOP project on the new technology to fight osteoprosis.

The symposium program aims to present to the clinical experts the state of the art in technologies to assess the risk of fractures in patients affected by osteoporosis.

Moderators of the symposium will be the VPHOP Project Coordinator, Marco Viceconti and the chair of the VPHOP Clinical Committee, Renè Rizzoli.

The program of the event is the following:

  • 14:00-14:15 Renè Rizzoli (Geneva University Hospital): The role of technology in the fight against osteoporosis
  • 14:15-14:30 Dieter Felsenberg (Charité, Berlin): Clinical prospectives on osteoporosis: bone and muscle
  • 14:30-14:45 Fulvia Taddei (Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli, Bologna): New technologies to predict the risk of fracture
  • 15:00-15:15 Bert van Rietbergen (Technical University Eindhoven): Tissue level imaging for critical risk assessment
  • 14:45-15:00 Ralph Müller (ETH Zurich): Cell and tissue based simulation of osteoporosis and pharmacological treatment
  • 15:15-15:30 Marco Viceconti (Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli, Bologna): Personalised, predictive, and integrative medicine: future scenarios for osteoporosis

About the Osteoporotic Virtual Physiological Human (VPHOP)
VPHOP is a Collaborative Integrated Project that is developing simulation-based technology to predict the risk of bone fracture in osteoporosis patients. Co-funded by the European Commission as part of the Seventh Framework Program. The project runs for four years starting from September 2008. Coordinated by Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute, the Project Consortium gathers 19 European Organisations based in Italy, The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, France, United Kingdom, Sweden, and Iceland.
