This will be the first time MEDINFO is held in Africa. It promises to boost exposure to grassroots healthcare delivery and the underpinning health information systems. This will open the door to new academic partnerships into the future and help to nurture a new breed of health informaticians.
A Medinfo conference is the official conference of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA). IMIA’s goals and objectives include:
- the promotion of informatics in health care and biomedical research,
- the advancement of international cooperation,
- the stimulation of research, development and education, and
- the dissemination and exchange of information.
"For more than 40 years, IMIA has been a bridging organisation, as medical informatics is an integrative discipline. IMIA supports and stimulates high-quality translational communication, research, education, and practice in biomedical and health informatics. In IMIA's Medinfo conferences this is done by bringing together, from a global perspective, scientists, researchers, informatics practitioners, vendors, consultants and suppliers in an environment of cooperation and sharing. The next Medinfo will include a special focus on the needs of and solutions from developing countries, in Africa and beyond," mentioned Prof. Dr. Reinhold Haux, President (2007-2010) of the International Medical Informatics Association.
The conference theme selected for Medinfo 2010 is a topic that most countries are currently addressing: Partnerships for effective eHealth solutions - Innovative collaborations promote solutions to health challenges.
Thirty Years of HIS experience HIS working conference 2010
In 1979 the first HIS working conference was held in Capetown South Africa. As a result of that conference the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) created a working group on hospital information systems. That working group organized a series of working conferences (Nijmegen, Gottingen, Durham, Heidelberg) of which the proceedings have been published.
The next World congress on Medical Informatics, Medinfo, will take place Sept 2010 in Capetown. Just before Medinfo, from Sept the 10th to Sunday Sept the 12th, the HIS WG is organizing a conference in conjunction with Medinfo to address the topic of health information systems, past and future. Bringing together the pioneers and new talents to pave the way to the future, merging visions of yesterday and of tomorrow, is a unique opportunity to address the challenges of the future with the wisdom of the experience.
A 2 days conference with 3 plenary sessions and 3 discussion groups sessions, each for 2 groups of 20-25 persons. The outcome will be reported during Medinfo 2010 in a panel session and the proceedings published in Methods of Information in Medicine. There will be 16 leading invited speakers covering the last 30 years of the domain to share their insights on this history, and their visions for the future.
