Departing NHS England Patient and Information Director to Deliver Swansong Speech at UK's Largest Digital Health Show

Outgoing NHS director for patients and information Tim Kelsey will speak for the last time in his current role to healthcare technology leaders at EHI Live, the UK's largest digital health event.

As one of the keynote speakers, Kelsey will open the conference, and share his final thoughts on how the NHS can build on the vision to harness the power of information to support health and care services. In December, Kelsey plans to take a new job in Australia to become commercial director of Telstra.

A driving force behind a revitalised approach to health technology within the NHS, Kelsey is closely associated with national policy initiatives such as the National Information Board’s Personalising health and care 2020 framework, and the controversial Care.data scheme.

The free-to-attend event, now run by Informa Life Sciences Exhibitions, will take place at the NEC Hall 1, Birmingham on 3rd and 4th November 2015, and is considered one of the most important and best-attended events in the UK eHealth calendar.

Tim Kelsey joins a prestigious list of other speakers from NHS, academic and industry backgrounds that includes: Beverley Bryant, director of digital technology at NHS England; Andy Williams, chief executive of the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC); Professor Ian Greer, vice president and dean, faculty of medical and human sciences, The University of Manchester; Dr Afzul Chaudry, CMIO, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust; and Kevin John Dean, non-executive director of Genomics England.

The Chief Clinical Information Officer (CCIO) National Conference and Health Chief Information Officer (CIO) National Conference also run as part of the show, and will look at how health technology leaders can achieve the ambition for a paperless NHS, and how digital health can support integrated health and care.

The show will feature 13 free-to-attend conferences, which cover topics that are at the very core of digital health today. Experts from across the UK will come together to tackle big industry issues such as IT leadership; health and social care integration; interoperability; open source technology; genomics; big data; wearables; imaging informatics and health apps.

The 13 strands of the conference programme are:

  • Annual CIO Conference - focusing on the local development of digital health strategies.

  • Big Data and Imaging Informatics - focusing on the significant challenges for the NHS in terms of security, governance and meaningful use, as well as genomic medicine.
  • Open Source, Data standards and Governance - developing guidelines and standards for information exchange.
  • Social Media Village - bringing together everyone in healthcare that is making social media work for the benefit of patients and citizens.
  • Pipeline - innovative healthcare suppliers leading sessions that provide a glimpse into the future.
  • Digital Primary Care - focusing on digital primary care developments.
  • Imaging Informatics Group Autumn Conference - including case studies and latest developments in imaging informatics.
  • Integration and Interoperability - examining medical information exchange in the NHS.
  • 3D Printing - exploring how 3D printing is being applied to medical devices, prosthetics, dentistry, pharmaceuticals and drug discovery.
  • HANDI Health Apps - Exploring the full potential of wearable technology.

New for 2015, NHS England will be hosting the "Digital Primary Care" conference, which will focus on topics such as remote monitoring of patients, patient activation, asset and resource optimisation, and the need for patient information to be available digitally to all healthcare professionals. Such data access is felt to be crucial to maximise efficiency, lower costs and improve care in primary care.

Speakers include, Tracy Grainger, head of digital primary care development, NHS England; Alan McDermott, programme director patient online, NHS England; Dr Massod Nazir, national clinical lead, NHS England and patients.
