AxSys Technology Unveils Enhanced Excelicare

AxSys Technology has unveiled its enhanced Excelicare clinical IT platform to provide NHS Trusts and primary care providers with a clear alternative to portals and a cost effective way to build electronic patient records (EPR).

Excelicare has the functionality of a portal and also works as a health information exchange but with the added benefits of enabling multi-disciplinary care coordination, supporting disease management and delivering rich clinical applications through its platform. The new version of Excelicare features a patient portal providing a personal health record (PHR) and also an advanced clinical explorer that allows enterprise wide viewing of integrated patient information utilising the HL7 Continuity of Care Document (CCD) standards.

As proof of its unique capability, Excelicare has been chosen as the core platform for one of the world's largest IT enabled chronic disease management programmes by eHealth Ontario, Canada in a highly competitive global tender process. In the first phase which is due to go–live imminently, Excelicare will manage over 1 million diabetics across the province of Ontario by connecting thousands of care providers and patients through a rich interactive clinical portal to actively coordinate diabetic care.

Dr Pradeep Ramayya, CEO of Glasgow-based AxSys Technology, said: "Today's NHS needs clinical software more than ever before. With Excelicare you don't need a big budget, or have to rip out and replace existing systems, as is often the case with a new EPR. With the drive towards integrated and coordinated care, the new Excelicare platform allows healthcare organisations to further raise their ability to share relevant clinical information and coordinate care across boundaries."

In the UK Excelicare is already the leading IT platform system for sexual health medicine, It is the national sexual health system for Scotland and is also widely used in other major UK centres including London NHS Trusts, University Hospital Birmingham, Liverpool, Sheffield and Central Manchester. Excelicare supports the use of kiosks, allows patients to book appointments on the web or by phone and get results by text.

The Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust is using Excelicare to replace departmental systems with custom clinical solutions built using the clinical care process modeller in Excelicare. This provides one clinical platform supporting many diverse clinical areas which breaks open information silos so clinicians can access the data when and where they need it.

Richard Kirman, clinical information project manager at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust commented: "The Excelicare system is now deeply embedded in the working practices at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust and is providing qualitative benefits to healthcare staff and patients in terms of visibility of information, timely communication, improved organisation and patient journey tracking. It also offers quantitative benefits in terms of reduced operational and capital costs and significantly reduced resource requirements for a given clinical process."

Across California, Excelicare is being used by 4 different healthcare groups as the next generation Health Information Exchange connecting thousands of care providers and managing more than a million patient records. Excelicare not only provides complete CCD for patients but is also used for ePrescribing, as a fully certified EMR system and also as a PHR by patients.

Unlike many IT companies AxSys Technology was founded and is run by clinicians who truly understand the needs of healthcare professionals.

Dr Ramayya concluded: "AxSys was set up because we knew that IT could transform healthcare, but the systems on the market simply didn't achieve many of the things that healthcare providers needed. We are deeply committed to providing the very best solutions for healthcare professionals - and we are well-placed to do that because we understand their needs and challenges. This is what makes AxSys and Excelicare stand out."

Excelicare is helping these organisations to build upon their existing IT investments without the need to rip-and-replace and offering the functionality they require to build a complete electronic patient record cost effectively.
