Motion Announces the Winner of its Second Annual Excellence in Mobile Point of Care Award

Motion ComputingMotion Computing® a leading global provider of tablet PCs and supporting mobility solutions, announced that the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded its Excellence in Mobile Point of Care Award - Europe. The annual award program recognises commitment and dedication to deploying mobile point-of-care solutions that focus on enhancing clinician satisfaction and delivering the highest quality of patient care possible.

The hospital has gone live with its latest deployment of Motion® C5v Tablet PCs, via Motion Computing partner Tracline. Nearly 50 tablet PCs have been deployed in this stage, extending the benefits of the Cerner Millennium® integrated electronic health record (EHR) system throughout the organisation.

The Motion C5v Tablet PCs allow for fast data entry directly into the shared EHR system at the patients' bedside. This eliminates a great deal of data entry duplication and increases observation round productivity - in the first nine days of the project, over 700 observation rounds were made - as well as compliance with Care Quality Commission (CQC) best practices. Ward managers have more accurate insight into "live beds," tracking not only the number of available beds but also the location of a given patient - an important consideration for infection control.

The C5v Tablet PCs continue to replace bulky legacy trolley-based systems. Laptops situated on carts on wheels (COWs) prevented bedside access, and data input for patient records remained cumbersome and time-consuming. The use of laptops required a great deal of time to ensure infection control protocols were kept up to the required standard.

The C5v Tablet PCs' sealed design is easily cleansed and disinfected with standard cleansers, ensuring compliance with infection control. In addition, the integrated smart card reader enables Royal Free clinicians to have a secure identification process for access to patient data, and the Microsoft® Windows®-based tablet allows for secure integration with the EHR application and network infrastructure across the hospital.

The trust also benefits from Advanced Technical Support’s ReadyDock™ docking and charging solution, which saves space in busy wards and ensures the tablets are fully charged and ready for use.

Will Smart, director of information management and technology, Royal Free London NHS Trust explained, "We have seen a very strong return on our investment with the Motion Tablet PCs and Cerner's EHR application, most critically in terms of improving patient care."

Ian Davies, UK country manager, Motion Computing commented, "Mobile technology continues to make a positive difference on the front line at the Royal Free. The pragmatic strategy adopted by the trust has yielded real results in terms of better patient care and seamless processes. As such, it is a great model for others to follow, and we are very pleased to have their continued support and confidence."
