The First JHI Connected Care Challenge Europe

Janssen Healthcare Innovation (JHI) announced the first ever JHI Connected Care Challenge Europe - a start-up and Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Challenge with three unique categories to spur innovation and drive action towards achieving better care and better health at lower cost through continuous improvement.

The objectives of the Challenge are

  • Highlight innovative tech-enabled solutions with the potential to dramatically increase the quality and effectiveness of care in relevant areas.
  • Demonstrate successful and scalable partnership models that improve the quality of care for patients/consumers.
  • Create strong and distributable learnings that can be leveraged broadly beyond the organizations involved.

Eligible solutions have to focus on any of these 3 categories:

1. Technology Enabled Self-care - Rapid development of mobile health apps and consumer biometrics has already helped millions of people set and achieve personal health goals. We are looking to identify the best new apps, services and devices designed to assist and motivate consumers and patients in the management of their own health.

2. From Hospital to Home - The proliferation of mobile and remote health care has provided the opportunity for more consumers to receive quality care in place of residence. At home quality care can reduce costs and improve outcomes, providing benefits to patients, payers and providers. The next generation of offerings should provide significant reductions in days in hospital, readmissions, etc. We are looking to identify platform solutions that can seamlessly integrate care from hospitals/physicians to the home environment with proven ability to reduce hospitalization days.

3. Maintaining Medication Adherence - Up to 50% of patients don't take their medications as prescribed. Medication non-adherence causes serious health problems, including delayed recover, disease relapse, hospitalization and even death. This contributes to billions of euros in avoidable medical spending every year. We are looking for research-based new applications that increase adherence through a myriad of touch points such as reminders, patient education and motivation.

The criteria used to select the winners will be the level of technology and/or service innovation and the potential impact the product or service could have in the healthcare marketplace.

The Jury will award 2 finalists per category, that will receive a trophy and the following cash prizes per category:

  • 1st prize: 7.500€
  • 2nd prize: 2.500€

The 1st prize winners will have the opportunity to make a public presentation of their technology during the Health2con conference on the evening of the 6th of November (Tuesday).

Winners will have the opportunity to include the prize logos in their corporate communications (stating the 2012 year). Their names and related photo material will be included in the broad dissemination of details of the winners to relevant blogs and news media.

Winners will also have the opportunity to enter into immediate discussions with the Janssen Healthcare Innovation team to identify a commercial trial relevant to the market goals of both organisations.

Participants need to be an SME located in Europe. Their technology needs to be implemented in at least a trial phase in a healthcare organization, if a product; or have already several users, if a service or app. Submissions will be accepted until September 17, 2012.

The challenge Final will take place in Berlin on the 5th of November 2012. It will take place in connection with the Health 2.0 Europe Conference.
