Evondos Solution Improves Patient Safety and Introduces New Efficiencies in Home Care

EvondosThe Finnish healthcare company Evondos Oy has introduced a novel automatic medication service that ensures a patient in home care gets a correct dose of the right medicine at the right time. In addition, the service enables active contact and communication between the patient and the healthcare personnel.

Automating the dispensing of medicines creates a number of benefits. Patient health improves when taking the medicine is not forgotten or belated. Malpractice risk is minimised when the medicines are dispensed correctly. In addition, automation frees up healthcare personnel's time from routine activities.

"We have developed a service model that brings remarkable savings to municipalities and home care service providers, on top of the patient safety improvements. According to our calculations, in a city of 50,000 people it is possible to achieve savings of one million euro annually," says Jyrki Niinistö, CEO of Evondos.

The Evondos solution makes use of the automatic dose dispensing method used in pharmacies. The medicines are mechanically inserted into little pouches that are placed in the Evondos-developed medicine dispenser. The automatic and user-friendly device reminds the patient by a spoken message, complemented by light and sound signals and, when necessary, through a phone call, when it is time to take the medicine. The device hands out the correct pouch and automatically opens it up for the patient. The healthcare personnel is automatically informed over the internet through the Evondos telecare system that the patient has taken the proper dose of medicine at the right time.

The device ensures the correct medication dosage in everyday life situations. The remote care system informs the healthcare personnel automatically that the medication has been taken, and that everything is well with the patient.

"The service is based on high technology, but the human aspect has especially been taken into consideration in its development. We keep getting positive feedback on the user-friendliness of the device and how it makes patients' everyday life easier," Mr Niinistö concludes.

The Evondos service has been deployed in three municipalities in Finland this spring.
