As surgical procedures continue to evolve from open surgery to minimally-invasive procedures, surgeons require a single hybrid operating room solution that meets the needs of both types of surgery. The new hybrid operating room at the Federal Russian Cardiology Research and Production Complex is equipped with Philips' latest interventional tools, such as its Allura Xper FD20 system with FlexMove for easy access to high resolution imaging and its HeartNavigator navigation tool, to support a wide range of minimally-invasive procedures. These include the repair of restrictions (stenoses) or ballooning (aneurysms) in arteries or veins, and minimally-invasive heart valve replacement (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI)).
"A hybrid intervention in cardiac surgery is associated with minimal patient trauma and gives positive results in 95% to 97% of the procedures," says Renat S. Akchurin, academician, associate professor of cardiovascular surgery and honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Medical Sciences (RAS & RAMS). "The results are really impressive. Patients recover quickly and leave the hospital after a relatively short period of time."
The Russian Cardiology Research and Production Complex is a federal institute and is Russia's leading national clinical and research institute for applied and fundamental cardiology. It leads the coordination of Russia's national research programs in the field of cardiovascular diseases.
After the opening ceremony for the new hybrid operating room, Renat S. Akchurin and Karl E. Hauptmann MD, Chief of the Cardiology Division at the Hospital of Barmherzigen Brüder (Trier, Germany), are performing TAVI and EVAR (Endovascular Aneurysm Repair) procedures that will be webcast live in both the Russian and English languages via www.philips.ru/live. The webcast starts at 08:20 AM CET.
Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and listen to answers online during the procedure. This will allow healthcare professionals and laypeople worldwide to learn more about new methods of treatment and new technologies for imaging and cardiac surgery.
"Philips is dedicated to creating the future of healthcare by delivering innovative solutions that address major healthcare challenges, such as the rise of cardiovascular disease," says Arjan de Jongste, Market Leader Philips Russia and Central Asia. "Because of the benefits to patients and care providers of image-guided minimally invasive treatments, such as greater patient comfort, shorter recovery periods, and faster patient throughput, it is a fast growing field of medicine and a key area of innovation for Philips."
Philips equipment installed in the hybrid operating room at this renowned Russian cardiology center also simplifies the workflow. Philips has installed its ceiling-mounted FlexMove option, allowing the Allura Xper FD 20 interventional X-ray imaging system to be moved both laterally and longitudinally in order to guarantee optimal access to the patient throughout procedures. Moreover, live 3D image guidance tools provide extra support for TAVI procedures: Philips HeartNavigator is an innovative procedure planning and image guidance tool to help interventional cardiologists and cardiac surgeons perform such procedures. The tool merges pre-operatively acquired 3D CT scans of the patient's heart with the live interventional X-ray views. Using this technology, physicians can now simultaneously see the detailed 3D anatomy of the patient's heart together with the positioning of the catheter and the placement and deployment of the artificial valve.
