To be, or not to be: eHealth Portal with 2 Million Expenditure

The Health Boards Executive (HeBE) in Ireland undertook the project on behalf of the (then) health boards and the Eastern Regional Health Authority. In July 2003, the HeBE commissioned consultants to carry out a short study to provide direction for the project. The consultants concluded that a phased development of the portal would be necessary, with progressive widening of the range of services made available on line.

Lead Market Initiative to Unlock Innovative Markets

The European Commission is proposing to unlock market potential for innovative goods and services by lifting obstacles hindering innovation in a first batch of six important markets: eHealth, protective textiles, sustainable construction, recycling, bio-based products and renewable energies. These markets with high economic and societal value represent an annual turnover of more than 120 billion and 1.9 million jobs in the EU. With this initiative they may increase to over 300 billion and over 3 million jobs in the EU in 2020.

Project to Develop Bat-Like Sonar for Robotic Systems

A new EU-funded project will delve into the mysteries of bat sonar. Building on the findings of the CIRCE (Chiroptera Inspired Robotic Cephaloid) and the CILIA (Customized Intelligent Life-Inspired Arrays) projects, the ChiRoPing project will attempt to develop two biomimetic models of bats, using reverse engineering.

ICT Project to Enhance Human-System Interactivity

As technical devices grow ever more sophisticated and their complexity increases, the EASY Interactions project is trying to enhance interaction between the human user and the technical system. Traditional control devices such as mouse, keyboard, joystick or screen have been outgrown by today's information and communication technology (ICT) gadgets, say project stakeholders, claiming that such difficulties inhibit many application opportunities.

The Priorities of the Slovenian Presidency in Research

The overarching goal of the Presidency in the field of R&D is the further development of the European Research (ERA). Being one of the central pillars to achieve the Lisbon objectives, the full realization of ERA will significantly contribute to making Europe the most competitive knowledge-based economy in the world.

One year into the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) and action is well underway, with the third call for proposals currently active. Information on the first projects accepted for funding under FP7 has now also been published on CORDIS, the EU's official information service for research and development.
