Versatile Reporting Supports Healthcare Management

TietoActive utilization of data saved in patient information systems is an essential part of developing healthcare operations. Together with Tieto, the Central Hospital of Central Ostrobothnia (Finland) has actively developed a new generation reporting tool as a part of Tieto's Effica system. The tool produces versatile data from the patient information system to support healthcare contents and processes.

Minna Mörtenhumer, Chief Physician in the Hospital District of Central Ostrobothnia, points out that reliable reporting allows for allocating the scarce resources of healthcare to where they are most needed. Development of functions improves the efficiency of the existing resources. "By virtue of the versatile reporting data we can arrange treatments and services better than before using the same resources. In the future, eliminating unnecessary visits and staging treatments will be based on real data, not just gut feeling," describes Mörtenhumer, skin and veneric diseases specialist in Kokkola Central Hospital.

Tool for clinics
"Effica Reporting enables cross reporting of contacts, referrals, diagnoses, interventions and billing. Issues and processes can be reviewed in relation to each other during a selected period, so that the effect of interventions can be assessed. For example, reliable referral information reflects the work in the organization: people commissioning work, the type of work and the urgency of requests. The analysis of referrals is a key factor influencing the development of operations and resource allocation," says Hannu Pikkarainen, Hospital District Planning Manager.

Mörtenhumer describes the new reporting tool as user-friendly. The required statistics are sent regularly and automatically via email. Independent searching for information is also possible. "The reports produce interesting and important data for each doctor about the volumes of their relevant special fields. The tool has been developed based on the clinics' needs," says Mörtenhumer.

Consistent recording is a prerequisite for reliable reporting. With the support of Tieto's consultation, the referral, diagnosis, intervention and billing practices and recording methods used in Kokkola were standardized, and the personnel was instructed in the implementation of the consistent practices.

The experience on actually utilizing the recorded patient information in planning the treatment and resources will also encourage healthcare staff to record data accurately. "Everybody involved in the treatment process of a patient must know how and where data should be recorded. Standardizing the concepts throughout the organization is an essential part of the development of reliable reporting. The actual nursing and development of functions is close teamwork," describes Mörtenhumer.
